Rights Respecting School

Lockwood is a Rights Respecting School.

We are a level 1 RRSA School

(Rights Respecting School Award)

The award centres around making sure that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is known and understood by all children and that children fully understand their own responsibilities in making sure that other people’s rights are upheld.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is a comprehensive human rights treaty that enshrines specific children’s rights in international law. The CRC consists of 54 articles. A ‘child’ is defined as every human being below the age of 18.

At Lockwood Primary School children learn about rights through the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). We believe that by understanding their own rights children learn to appreciate and uphold the rights of others. Children are taught that although Rights can never be taken away, they are taught that with a right comes a responsibility.

Our School Charter summarises the schools vision and interprets this as the Rights and Responsibilities we all have in our school community.

Article 29 of the UNCRC underlines our vision as a school:

“Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.”

At Lockwood all children and adults work together to recognise and act upon the rights of the child with respect to the school, the local community and the wider world.
